Business Spotlight on Ankeny Sanitation

How has your business changed in the past month?
Ankeny Sanitation has been business as usual. We are an essential business and our services are needed to keep cities, businesses, and communities clean and sanitary. We have helped some of our local customers who have been impacted greatly by this pandemic… many restaurants and other local businesses have had to cut back on their normal services due to closing or reduced hours. We know that by decreasing their service it will help their bottom line-until they are able to go back to their normal business hours. Our roll off business on the other hand has increased greatly-besides the fact that it’s construction season, there are many businesses and home owners using this time as a clean out or purge. We are taking all the necessary precautions to keep our drivers and office staff safe during this pandemic. We still have normal business hours, but ask that people who are ill or feeling under the weather to not stop in at our office for drop offs. Our staff is also recommended to stay home if they are ill. We are taking the social distancing recommendations seriously-trying to keep all staff and drivers 6 feet apart at all times.

What are you most grateful for at this time?
I think we are most greatly for our new facility. Despite the pandemic, Ankeny Sanitation was able to move into its new building April 3rd. We have been anxious and have been looking forward to this move for the last year. Although the timing of the move was not the best, it actually couldn’t have come at a better time. Our new facility is much bigger and it gives our staff the ability to better practice the guidelines of social distancing. We are thankful to have this new facility and are looking forward to celebrating our grand opening once the pandemic is behind us.

What is keeping you up at night?
I think the hardest part of the job right now is keeping the spirits up of the businesses we service. There are some businesses that might not make it through this challenging time. Our customers are like family to us-as we get to know them on a personal level, not just a business level. Our staff is doing what they can to reassure all of the business owners we service, but it’s hard to know what the future will bring during this uncertain time. We also worry about our drivers out in the field. Garbage service is a hard job and our drivers are on the front lines as well. They have to endure some stops that might have had a covid19 case… they are all taking the precautions needed, but it doesn’t stop us all from worrying about their safety.

How are you working to overcome these challenges?
Our Sales team and customer service staff is talking to as many customers as we can… we are more than just a service provider right now, we are also a friend. We hope that our personal touch and our local call center will help our customers stay strong during this difficult time. Our drivers are instructed daily by our safety manager and driver manager about taking all the proper precautions during their routes. We are limiting the number of drivers in the dispatch area upon the return of the routes as well. Our mottos is still “the ease of doing business,” but we are just doing it these days from a distance. We are still here if you need us, so please call on us with any questions or concerns about your service.

Can you share any bright stories or information?
We have had some customers that have had to increase their service because their business is stronger and busier than it’s ever been-so there are some happy stories right now as well. Some meetings done over lunch or in person, have been reduced to Zoom meeting or conference calls, but because of all these restrictions we have gotten the chance to speak on a more personal level with our customers. The first thing that is asked is, “How are you doing during this difficult time in our nation?” The question always leads to hearing more about their family and lives and we get to learn more about our customers than what we would’ve known before. We also get to hear that most are well and healthy through all of this-which is ultimate goal.

What can the Chamber do to assist you at this time?
Just to let the community know that we are still here serving and taking care of the garbage world one pick up at a time. If there is anyone needing garbage service on the commercial/residential/construction level or just needing some reassurance about their current services, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Ankeny Sanitation. We will be here to serve the community during this pandemic, and we will be here to help pick up the pieces when the pandemic is over. Stay Strong Waukee!
